THE SWEEPERS PROGRAM
Our “sweepers” literally sweep the streets and provide graffiti abatement on 25 city blocks in the upper Haight. Our participants volunteer their time six days a week, demonstrating community involvement and a commitment to developing their job and life skills. In exchange, Taking It to the Streets provides safe housing, personal mentoring, workforce readiness training, and linkages to other supportive services to help them realize their personal goals and attain self-sufficiency.
While many are interested in this program, T2S selects young adults that demonstrate a commitment to themselves and to their community and are motivated to keep and maintain agreements that get them off the streets.
Our clients meet regularly with mentors to discuss life goals and plan for their future. Each participant's individualized plan could include finishing a degree, building a resume, getting access to behavioral or physical health services, or saving for a security deposit. Since we launched in 2014 we've successfully helped over 60 young adults get off the streets, and the numbers are growing.
